Samsung, Intel unveil Tizen OS at MWC

Tizen is a Linux-based OS that emerged after the end of Nokia's MeeGo platform.

Samsung and Intel have introduced the Tizen operating system (OS) for smartphones.at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. The new operating system will compete against Apple's iOS, Google's Android.

Tizen is a Linux-based OS and will work and look similar to Android phones, but the square app icons are round.

The launch of new smartphones follow Samsung's move to reduce its dependence on Google's Android OS after the Internet search firm acquired Motorola Mobility for $12.5bn in May 2012.

UK-based Orange and Japan's NTT DoCoMo network have already confirmed that they will be selling Tizen-powered handsets from Samsung and Huawei during second half of this year.

Earlier this year, Samsung revealed plans to merge its Bada OS platform with Intel backed Tizen to move away from Google's Android.

Recently, Samsung said it is not interested in powering its phones with Mozilla's new browser-based operating system.

Android has recently become the leader of the global smartphone marketplace with a share of 53% .
